Each block = 9 small squares \u2192 56 \u00d7 9 = <strong>504 small squares<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of those, half of the blocks are colorful nine-patches and half are white\/cornerstone blocks (the counts below will ensure you have enough).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cut list (suggested \u2014 you can cut lot from fat quarters):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>white\/cream background<\/strong> (for white blocks &amp; filler):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut <strong>~300 squares<\/strong> 4\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 4\u00bd&#8221;. (This covers the white fields and some extra for mistakes.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>assorted scrappy prints (reds\/greens\/plaid\/novelty)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut <strong>~160 squares<\/strong> 4\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 4\u00bd&#8221;. Spread across many prints; make sure to include many different tones so the nine-patches read scrappy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>solid\/strong red (cornerstones and accents)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut <strong>~44 squares<\/strong> 4\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 4\u00bd&#8221;. (28 cornerstone blocks \u00d7 4 cornerstones = 112 red cornerstones \u2014 wait: that\u2019s 112; if you want every cornerstone red you actually need 28 \u00d7 4 = 112 red squares. But many designs mix cornerstones, so if you want all cornerstones red, cut <strong>120 red<\/strong> squares. To keep it simple below I\u2019ll instruct making cornerstones red in each white block and allow scrappy substitutions. Let\u2019s give final clear numbers:)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Revised counts for clarity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>White\/cream: <strong>~300 squares<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red solid (cornerstones): <strong>~120 squares<\/strong> (if all cornerstones are red).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scrappy assorted prints (for nine-patch centers and 8 other squares per block): <strong>~84 nine-patch blocks \u00d7 average 9 squares??<\/strong> Wait\u2014easiest: assume 28 nine-patch blocks \u00d7 9 = 252 scrappy squares. So cut <strong>~260 assorted squares<\/strong> from prints (plaids, greens, holiday motifs) for the nine-patch units.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(You can mix red into the scrappy nine-patches if you prefer fewer solid reds\u2014adjust accordingly.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Practical approach if using fat quarters: cut each fat quarter into 6\u20138 squares 4\u00bd&#8221; \u2014 assemble until you have the counts you need.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Piecing plan (simple, reliable method)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Both block types are 3\u00d73 grids of 4&#8243; finished squares, so the sewing is consistent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make the scrappy <strong>Nine-Patch block<\/strong> by sewing three horizontal rows of three 4\u00bd&#8221; squares (chain-piecing), press, then join rows into a 12\u00bd&#8221; unfinished square and trim to 12&#8243; finished.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make the <strong>Cornerstone White block<\/strong> by arranging: <code>RED WHITE RED WHITE WHITE WHITE RED WHITE RED<\/code> (all small squares 4\u00bd&#8221;). Sew rows and join in same way for 12&#8243; finished block.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because both blocks finish at the same dimension, they join in a checkerboard layout seamlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step-by-step assembly<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Prepare small squares<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Press all fabrics. Organize squares in labeled stacks or trays (RED, WHITE, PRINT1, PRINT2, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lay out a single nine-patch block first as a sample to verify color balance: make each nine-patch with a strong center print and contrasting surrounding prints to create depth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Sew nine-patch blocks (28 units)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>(Repeat for 28 blocks)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For each nine-patch, arrange nine 4\u00bd&#8221; squares in a 3\u00d73 on your work surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew each horizontal row: place pair 1 and 2 right sides together, sew a \u00bc&#8221; seam, then add square 3 to finish the row. Chain-piece rows for speed. Press seams for each row (press two rows one direction, middle row opposite so seams can nest).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Join the three rows: match seam intersections carefully, pin if needed, sew the rows together. Press.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trim the finished block to <strong>12\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 12\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> (unfinished), square it up and then it will measure 12&#8243; finished when sewn in.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Sew cornerstone white blocks (28 units)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>(Repeat for 28 blocks)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Layout: Row 1 = RED \/ WHITE \/ RED; Row 2 = WHITE \/ WHITE \/ WHITE; Row 3 = RED \/ WHITE \/ RED (all 4\u00bd&#8221; squares).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew rows as above, then sew rows together, press, trim to 12\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 12\u00bd&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Tip: Chain-piece many at once \u2014 sew Row 1 for multiple blocks in one chain, then Row 2 for multiple, then Row 3, then join.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) Block quality check<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make one row of 7 blocks on your design wall\/floor first (Row 1). Press seams on alternate rows in opposite directions so when you join Row 1 to Row 2 the seams will nest (press Row 1 seams to the left, Row 2 seams to the right, etc.). This makes matching intersection \u201ccrosses\u201d sharp.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) Layout the quilt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lay out your 7 \u00d7 8 block grid following a checkerboard arrangement: start top-left with a nine-patch block and alternate across and down. (That yields 28 of each block type over 8 rows and 7 columns.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rearrange scrappy nine-patches until the color balance is pleasing \u2014 distribute reds\/greens\/plaid so they don\u2019t cluster.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6) Sew blocks into rows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sew the 7 blocks in Row 1 left\u2192right with \u00bc&#8221; seam allowance. Press seam allowances for the entire row in a single direction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat for all 8 rows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7) Join rows into the quilt top<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alternate pressing direction on adjacent rows (Row 1 seams pressed left, Row 2 right, Row 3 left, etc.) so seams will nest when joining.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pin at every block intersection matching seam points. Sew rows together one at a time, then press.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After all rows are joined you will have a quilt center of <strong>84&#8243; \u00d7 96&#8243;<\/strong> (12&#8243; \u00d7 7 = 84; 12&#8243; \u00d7 8 = 96). If there is small variation due to seam allowance, trim edges straight with a long ruler before adding borders.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8) Optional inner\/outer borders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The pictured quilt has a narrow red border and wider outer red binding. If you want the framed effect:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add a <strong>1&#8243; finished (2\u00bd&#8221; cut)<\/strong> red inner border all around: cut 4 strips 2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 84\u00bd&#8221; (sides) and 2 strips 2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 90\u00bd&#8221; (top &amp; bottom). Sew sides first, press, then top &amp; bottom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add a wider outer border (optional) or go straight to binding. If you prefer cabining, add a 3\u20134&#8243; outer border in a coordinating print.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9) Baste, quilt &amp; bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prepare backing (join lengths if needed) and batting slightly larger than your quilt top.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Baste (spray or pins) on a flat surface, smoothing to eliminate wrinkles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quilt: suggested options that fit this style:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>All-over stipple<\/strong> or meander (gives a soft, cozy finish).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wide diagonal lines<\/strong> echoing the checkerboard (1\u00bd\u20132&#8243; spacing) for a modern look.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Channel quilting<\/strong> between block seams to emphasize the grid.<br>Use neutral thread for subtle quilting or red\/green in selective areas for accent. A walking foot is helpful for straight-line quilting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trim quilt edges square and attach binding: cut 2\u00bd&#8221; strips, join into one continuous length, machine sew to front, fold and hand stitch to back for a classic finish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helpful tips &amp; troubleshooting<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make a test block<\/strong> first and measure it. If the test block is off, fix seam allowance before making the rest.
