From that you\u2019ll cut exactly the counts you want. For a quick scrappy build, cut:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Background (cream\/white)<\/strong>: <strong>115 squares<\/strong> (approx estimate below)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tree (greens \/ red ornaments \/ prints)<\/strong>: <strong>~92 squares<\/strong> (includes the star and any ornament\/red squares)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trunk (dark)<\/strong>: <strong>6 squares<\/strong> (3 wide \u00d7 2 high)<br>(These add to 221 \u2014 see exact row map next.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Border cuts (finished sizes):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inner narrow red border \u2014 finished width <strong>\u00bd&#8221;\u2013\u00be&#8221;<\/strong>: cut <strong>2 strips<\/strong> width-of-quilt + 4&#8243;:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If finished width \u00bd&#8221; (very narrow), cut strips 1&#8243; wide. Use this map to place fabrics: pick a mix of greens\/pine plaids for T squares, sprinkle in a handful of red\/print squares for \u201cornaments,\u201d and place 1\u20132 golden\/yellow squares at the top for the star (S) \u2014 you can also use a small metallic print.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Counts from this map<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tree (T): 92 squares<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Star (S): 1 square<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trunk (U): 6 squares<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Background (B): 122 squares<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total: 221 squares<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(If you want exact counts by color e.g., how many dark greens vs light greens, split the 92 tree squares however you like \u2014 scrappy looks great.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step-by-step construction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Cut all squares<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From background fabric, cut <strong>122 squares 3&#8243;\u00d73&#8243;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From various tree fabrics, cut <strong>~92 squares 3&#8243;\u00d73&#8243;<\/strong> (mix greens, plaids, reds for ornaments).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From trunk fabric, cut <strong>6 squares 3&#8243;\u00d73&#8243;<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut inner red border strips (see above) and outer floral border strips now or later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tip: chain-piece your cutting \u2014 stack several layers and cut multiple layers at once if your tools and fabric allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Arrange the squares<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On a design wall or flat floor, lay out the full 13\u00d717 grid following the layout map. This step is crucial so you can audition placement of scrappy greens and ornament\/red squares.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay attention to balancing dark and light greens for depth. Place reds sparingly so \u201cornaments\u201d pop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Sew in rows (piecing)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll piece the top row by row (13 squares per row). Use <strong>\u00bc&#8221; seam allowance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To speed up, <strong>chain piece<\/strong> each row: place two adjacent squares RS together and sew along one edge, continue adding squares in the row sewing each new square to the previous, trimming threads between chain segments if desired.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press seams <strong>open<\/strong> or <strong>to one side<\/strong> \u2014 many prefer pressing to one side for less bulk; if you press to the side, press alternating rows opposite directions when you join rows (to help seams nest). I recommend pressing seams <strong>open<\/strong> for this dense small-square quilt (reduces bulk at intersections).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Row order:<\/strong> work top-to-bottom (rows 1 \u2192 17) or any order you like, but keep neat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) Join rows into the full panel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After all 17 rows are finished (each 13 squares sewn), join rows together, matching seam intersections carefully to preserve the pixel tree motif. Use pins at intersections to make seams align well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew rows together with \u00bc&#8221; seam allowance. Press seam allowances open (or press alternating directions so seams can nest). Open pressing will reduce bulk where four seams cross.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> With small squares, accurate \u00bc&#8221; seam and consistent stitching are essential so grid lines stay straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) Add inner narrow red border<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After the center panel is assembled and pressed, add the inner narrow red border: with RS facing, sew red strip along the two long sides and two short ends. (If your red strips were cut 1&#8243; wide, they will finish about \u00bd&#8221; width after sewing.) Press toward the border.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6) Add outer floral border<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Measure the quilt top after inner border is added. Cut floral border strips <strong>3\u00bd&#8221; wide<\/strong> to the correct lengths (two widths and two heights accounting for seam allowances).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew the long side borders first, press, then sew on the top\/bottom strips. Press.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7) Square up the quilt top<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trim any uneven edges so the outer border is straight and the quilt is square.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basting &amp; Quilting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Layer backing (right side down), batting, then quilt top (right side up). Smooth and baste using safety pins, basting spray, or your preferred method. Make sure layers are flat and smooth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quilting ideas (to match the cozy feel)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Meandering\/free-motion stipple<\/strong>: a classic choice that keeps the patchwork readable and gives a quilted texture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Echo quilting around tree silhouette<\/strong>: trace the outline of the tree with an echo (2\u20133 lines spaced) and fill the background with loose meandering.
