If you want it longer\/shorter make more\/fewer blocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cutting<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>(Measurements shown are <strong>cut sizes<\/strong> unless marked \u201cfinished.\u201d Add a \u00bc&#8221; seam when joining \u2014 instructions below already account for seam allowance by giving raw cut sizes.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For each 10&#8243; finished link block (make 6)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Center square (finished 4&#8243;):<\/strong> cut <strong>4\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 4\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> (one from center\/contrast fabric \u2014 white dotted in photo).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inner scrappy log strips (1&#8243; finished):<\/strong> cut several strips <strong>1\u00bc&#8221; wide<\/strong> (these will be sub-cut as needed for side lengths). You\u2019ll need strips long enough to surround the center: for one block approximate total strip length needed = 4 sides \u00d7 (4&#8243; + two seam allowances) \u2248 cut 4 strips about <strong>4\u00bd&#8221; long<\/strong> from assorted greys; but easier: cut a few long 1\u00bc&#8221; \u00d7 WOF strips (WOF = width-of-fabric) and subcut as you go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outer red frame strips (2&#8243; finished):<\/strong> cut strips <strong>2\u00bd&#8221; wide<\/strong>. For each block you need four frame strips to surround the inner unit, cut lengths of about <strong>10\u00bd&#8221; raw<\/strong> (we\u2019ll trim to final). Again easiest: cut 2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 WOF and subcut.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you prefer precut: for six blocks, cut:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Red 2\u00bd&#8221; strips: about 8\u201310 strips 2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 42&#8243; (you will use relatively little).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scrappy grey 1\u00bc&#8221; strips: a bunch of 1\u00bc&#8221; \u00d7 WOF strips (reuse across blocks).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background \/ Setting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Background squares (to place between block corners when setting on point):<\/strong> cut <strong>2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 2\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> squares (these become 2&#8243; finished setting squares). You\u2019ll need about <strong>10\u201312<\/strong> of these (we\u2019ll use 5 between 6 blocks plus a few for ends).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Large background triangles \/ corner filler:<\/strong> To set a 10&#8243; square on point inside a 16&#8243; width runner, we\u2019ll add triangles above &amp; below the row. Cut background squares 16\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 16\u00bd&#8221; and cut into quarters to make corner triangles when needed (instructions below). Alternatively cut triangles directly \u2014 I prefer the square-into-quarters method for accuracy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Borders<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Inner narrow border (optional, grey textured in photo):<\/strong> cut <strong>2\u00be&#8221; \u00d7 WOF<\/strong> strips (for a 2&#8243; finished border we cut 2\u00be&#8221; raw). You\u2019ll need two strips for long edges (join if needed) and two for short edges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Binding:<\/strong> cut 2\u00bc&#8221; finished binding \u2192 strip width <strong>2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 WOF<\/strong>, 3\u20134 strips joined for full length.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make one link block \u2014 step-by-step (repeat 6\u00d7)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>This block construction is a simple \u201ccenter square \u2192 inner log ring \u2192 outer frame\u201d approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Center:<\/strong> Start with your center square cut <strong>4\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 4\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> (this yields a 4&#8243; finished after seams). Press.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add inner logs (1&#8243; finished, cut 1\u00bc&#8221; wide):<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Subcut four grey strips to lengths approximately: two <strong>4\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> (for left &amp; right) and two <strong>6\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> (for top &amp; bottom \u2014 because they wrap around seam allowances). Exact lengths aren\u2019t critical because we\u2019ll square up later; if using long strips simply sew them in sequence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew one 1\u00bc&#8221; grey strip to the right edge of the center square (align raw edges, \u00bc&#8221; seam). Press seam toward strip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew a second 1\u00bc&#8221; grey strip to the left edge. Press.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew one strip to the top and one to the bottom, all four forming a single &#8220;frame&#8221; of grey around the center. When adding top and bottom, sew them to the whole unit (not to center alone), nesting seams as you go so seams lie flat. Press outwards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The inner unit should now be roughly 6\u00bd&#8221; square raw (lock + seam allowances); square it if needed but leave some extra for outer frame.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add outer red frame (2&#8243; finished, cut 2\u00bd&#8221; wide):<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Subcut four red strips from the 2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 WOF strips: two about <strong>10\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> for top\/bottom and two about <strong>10\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> for left\/right (you can start with longer and trim).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sew one red strip to the right side of the inner grey-framed unit. Press. Sew the left red strip. Then sew the top and bottom red strips. Press.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trim\/square the block to <strong>10\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 10\u00bd&#8221; raw<\/strong> (this will be <strong>10&#8243; finished<\/strong>). Use a square ruler and align center seams so the block is centered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That\u2019s one <strong>10&#8243; finished link block<\/strong>. Repeat until you have <strong>six<\/strong> blocks (or your desired number).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Setting blocks on point (create the chain)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>We are going to set the 10&#8243; squares on point (so the square tips face top\/bottom) and join them corner-to-corner with small setting squares. This produces the linked chain look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Decide block order<\/strong> \u2014 lay your 6 blocks on a design wall\/bed\/table in a diagonal line so the block centers line up and the red frames interlock visually (alternate which way the inner grey logs face if you want variety).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make setting squares:<\/strong> Make about <strong>5\u20136<\/strong> small background squares <strong>2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 2\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> for placement between the touching corners of two on-point blocks. These small squares act as the little white dots\/connection points in the photo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Layout the on-point row:<\/strong> Place Block 1 on point; to its lower-right corner place a small 2\u00bd&#8221; background square, then place Block 2 on point rotated so its upper-left corner meets that setting square. Repeat to link Block 3, 4, 5, 6. The raw sizes will be 10&#8243; block diagonals, and the small 2\u00bd&#8221; squares will sit between corners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sew blocks into a strip:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For each adjacent pair: sew the small 2\u00bd&#8221; square to the corner of one block first (use a small \u00bc&#8221; seam and press). You can also use the \u201csquare-in-a-square\u201d stitch and trim technique for better accuracy: align the 2\u00bd&#8221; square on top of the corner of the block (right sides together), stitch \u00bc&#8221; from the corner, trim the extra, press open \u2014 this yields a tiny corner square attached.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Join the assembled pairs into a continuous strip: sew Block1+setting to Block2+setting, etc. Use a walking foot\/slow sewing to match corners. Press seam allowances so units nest (alternate direction).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trim the completed strip:<\/strong> After joining all blocks, square the entire strip so the long edges are straight and even. The finished length should be ~60&#8243; finished (6 \u00d7 10&#8243;), plus the small influence of the setting squares; trim so the runner is even.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add background triangles \/ top &amp; bottom filler<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Because blocks are set on point, the runner will have triangular background spaces at the top and bottom and maybe small triangular gaps on the sides. We\u2019ll add background triangles to square it to a rectangle for borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make two background corner triangles<\/strong>: Cut two <strong>16\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 16\u00bd&#8221;<\/strong> background squares, cut each into quarters (diagonally) to make large triangles. Attach a triangle to the top and bottom of the chain so they fill to a final runner width of <strong>16&#8243;<\/strong> (you\u2019ll actually trim to 16&#8243; final width).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Align the long straight edge of the triangle to the top edge of the runner strip, stitch along the straight edge, press. Repeat for bottom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trim &amp; square<\/strong>: With triangles attached, trim the overall runner to <strong>16\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 final length (raw)<\/strong> and then square to <strong>16&#8243; \u00d7 60&#8243; finished<\/strong> (trim \u00bc&#8221; seam allowance into final size). The 16\u00bd&#8221; raw width gives 16&#8243; finished after final seam allowance if you prefer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add borders<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add the <strong>outer grey textured border<\/strong> by sewing 2\u00be&#8221; raw (2&#8243; finished) strips to the long sides first, then short sides, miter corners if you wish. Press seams outward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trim whole runner so final size is <strong>16&#8243; \u00d7 60&#8243; finished<\/strong> (including binding allowance).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basting &amp; Quilting<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Baste<\/strong> your sandwich (backing wrong side up, batting, top right side up) with safety pins about 4\u20136&#8243; apart or use spray baste. Prepare binding (2\u00bd&#8221; \u00d7 WOF strips joined into one long strip).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attach binding to front with \u00bc&#8221; seam, miter corners, fold to back, hand-stitch for invisible finish or machine stitch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give a final press. Add a label if you like (date, name, pattern).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips &amp; troubleshooting<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Accuracy matters<\/strong> when making the inner log ring and outer frame \u2014 keep seams consistent \u00bc&#8221;.
