🌿 Step-by-Step Tutorial
1️⃣ Foundation Chain
- Chain a multiple of 4 + 2 (for example, 42 ch for a sample swatch).
- Turn your work and start in the second chain from the hook.
2️⃣ Row 1 – Base Row
- Work 1 sc in each chain across.
- Chain 2 and turn (this chain 2 counts as your first dc in the next row).
3️⃣ Row 2 – First Texture Row
- Dc in the next 3 stitches.
- Fpdc around the first dc of the group (the one you just made 3 stitches back).
- This creates a raised, twisted column.
- Skip 1 stitch (already covered by the fpdc) and repeat across the row:
→ (dc 3 times, fpdc around first dc of group) - At the end of the row, dc in the last stitch to keep edges even.
- Chain 2, turn.
🪄 Tip: The fpdc should be worked around the post of the earlier dc (not in the top loop). Pull slightly so the stitch stands up vertically.
4️⃣ Row 3 – Establish Pattern
- Dc in next 3 stitches.
- Fpdc around the first dc of this group (the one 3 stitches back).
- Repeat this sequence across the entire row.
- Dc in last stitch, ch 2, turn.
5️⃣ Rows 4 – End
Repeat Row 3 for all following rows.
As you build height, you’ll see vertical “twist” lines (the fpdc columns) forming across your fabric — they look like braided or cinnamon-stick textures.
6️⃣ Finishing Edge
- After the final texture row, work one row of single crochet across the top for a neat finish.
- Fasten off and weave in ends with a tapestry needle.

🧩 Optional Border (for projects like blankets)
Work 1 round of single crochet evenly around all sides:
- 1 sc in each stitch and 3 sc in each corner.
- If desired, add a decorative second round using reverse single crochet (crab stitch) for a twisted rope edge.
📏 Example Stitch Count Reference
Chain | Approx Width (medium yarn) |
---|---|
26 ch | 15 cm sample swatch |
42 ch | 25 cm narrow scarf |
62 ch | 35–40 cm table runner |
102 ch | 60–70 cm baby blanket |
✨ Tips
- Keep your tension slightly loose — fpdc stitches pull the fabric tighter.
- Use a solid color yarn to show the raised lines clearly.
- For two-tone texture, alternate yarn colors every 2 rows.
- When turning, always chain 2 (not 3) to maintain even height.
