CROCHET easy summer crochet models for beginners Blouse, tunic, vest, dress, pareo, curtain, runner

Materials & Basics (applies to all models)

  • Yarn: light-weight summer yarn — sport/DK (approx 3/4 ply) or cotton 100%. For beachwear you can use lighter linen/cotton blend.
  • Hook: 3.0–4.5 mm depending on yarn & desired drape (3.5 mm is a good all-rounder).
  • Notions: tapestry needle, blocking pins, tape measure, stitch markers, scissors.
  • Abbreviations (US): ch, sc, hdc, dc, tr, sl st, st, rep, RS (right side).
  • Gauge: not critical for these modular pieces, but make a 10×10 cm swatch in the main repeat to estimate stitches/inch if you want precise sizing.

The “One or Two-Row” Repeat (core stitch families)

These summer models are built from simple, memorized repeats. Two friendly repeats I use below:

A — V-Arch Repeat (airy & fast, 6 + 3 multiple)

  • Pattern works in multiples of 6 + 3.
  • Setup row: dc row over foundation chain.
  • Repeat row (the one you memorize): ch 3 (counts dc), dc in next dc, *ch 3, skip next dc, V-st (dc,ch1,dc) into ch-1 space from previous row, ch 3, dc in next 2 dc* — repeat across, end with dc.
  • This creates gentle arches + V-lace → perfect for blouses, tunics, pareos.

B — Fan + Mesh Repeat (petal/fan look, 8 + 1 multiple)

  • Multiple of 8 + 1.
  • Setup: dc base row.
  • Row A (fan row): work 5 dc fans into chain spaces from previous row separated by dc pairs.
  • Row B (mesh/anchor): ch-arches and sc stabilizer.
  • Repeat Rows A + B. Great for motifs, runners, curtains.

Pick the repeat that fits the garment look you want: A is stretchy & drapey; B is decorative and slightly denser.

1) Easy Summer Blouse — Boxy, Two Panels (Beginner)

Simple rectangular panels — front and back — sewn at shoulders and sides.

Finished idea: light, open blouse for warm weather.

Materials

  • DK cotton, 350–600 g depending on size and length.
  • Hook 3.5 mm.

Sample finished half-widths (approx):

  • S: 22 cm (9″) half-front → full chest ~44 cm (17″)
  • M: 25 cm (10″) half-front → full chest ~50 cm (20″)
  • L: 28 cm (11″) half-front → full chest ~56 cm (22″)

Foundation chain

  • Use Repeat A (multiple 6 + 3). Example chains:
    • S: ch 51 (6×8=48 +3)
    • M: ch 57 (6×9=54 +3)
    • L: ch 63 (6×10=60 +3)

Setup row

  • Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.

Main repeat (repeat until desired length)

  • Row R (only row to memorize):
ch 3, dc in next dc, *ch 3, skip next dc, (dc, ch1, dc) into the ch-1 space from previous row, ch3, dc in next 2 dc* — repeat to end, turn.

How long

  • Repeat Row R until panel height = desired length (shoulder→hem). Example blouse length: 54–60 cm (21–24″) for tunic; 48 cm (19″) for blouse.

Assembly

  1. Make identical front & back. Block.
  2. With RS together, sew shoulder seams leaving desired neck opening (e.g., leave central 18–22 cm).
  3. Sew sides from hem up to armhole depth (leave 15–20 cm for armhole for small sizes).
  4. Finish neckline & armholes: sc 1–2 rounds neat; optional shell round for decoration.

Variations

  • Add short sleeves by picking up stitches at armhole and working 6–10 rounds of dc/hdc.
  • Add fringe or tassels at hem.

2) Tunic (Long Blouse) — Same Repeat, Longer Panels

Use the exact blouse instructions but make panels longer.

Sizing

  • Use the same foundation chains as blouse for width; increase rows to reach tunic length (e.g., 70–85 cm / 27–33″ for a knee-skimming tunic depending on height).

Side slits

  • Stop side seams at a longer height and leave the last 15–20 cm unsewn to create roomy side slits.

Optional waist shaping (very simple)

  • Work panels full width until underbust, then decrease 1 repeat per side (skip the first/last V-st) for 2–4 rows to create a subtle waist, then return to full width.

3) Blanket-Vest / Baby Blanket Vest (Fold & Sew) — No shaping

This is the simple “blanket vest” idea (works for all ages).

Materials

  • DK yarn, 150–400 g (depending on child/adult size)
  • Hook 4.0 mm

Foundation

  • Chain width = desired half-circumference × stitches per cm (use multiple that matches repeat A or B). Example adult: ch 100 (adjust).

Rows

  • Use Repeat A (or fan repeat B) until length = shoulder to hem (e.g., adult 60 cm).

Fold & sew

  1. Fold rectangle so top edge becomes shoulder region; seam short shoulder seams leaving center neck gap.
  2. Sew sides leaving armholes. Add border sc around neck, armholes, hem.

Simple, fast, no shaping.

4) Sundress (Panel + Skirt / Motif Skirt)

Two approaches: (A) Straight panels, (B) motif skirts.

A — Straight Panel Body + Skirt

  • Make two panels for bodice (same as blouse but shorter); join at shoulders and sides to underbust; attach a circular skirt worked in rounds or joined motifs.

B — Motif Skirt (modular)

  • Make square motifs using Repeat B and join-as-you-go to make the skirt rows; attach skirt to bodice.

Quick bodice recipe (A)

  • Chain (multiple 6 + 3) for half-bust. Row R repeat until bodice height = 22–25 cm. Join shoulders leaving neck gap; pick up stitches along bottom and work circular rounds of fans (Repeat B) increasing as you go to make skirt flare — add repeats for length.

Skirt increases (simple)

  • In each round increase 8–12 dc evenly to add flare (or add extra fan clusters every few rounds).

5) Pareo / Beach Wrap (Triangle or Rectangle)

Fast, one-piece beach cover resembling the video’s pareo.

Option A — Rectangle sarong

  • Foundation chain = desired waist/hip width. Work Repeat A until rectangle height ≈ waist band height. Wrap and tie.

Option B — Triangle pareo (top-down shawl style)

  • Start at center top with ch 4 → (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ring. Use Repeat A logic but increase at the centre as a triangle shawl (like shawl pattern earlier). Continue until triangle is large enough to wrap. Tie at hips.

6) Curtain (Panel) — Fan + Mesh Repeat B recommended

Curtains need vertical repeats and straight edges.

Materials

  • Cotton thread or light DK, hook 2.5–3.5 mm depending on look.
  • Width = window width + ease. Height = desired length.

Foundation & multiple

  • Use Repeat B multiples of 8 + 1.

Construction

  1. Chain to width (8×N + 1). Row 1 dc base row.
  2. Row A (fan row): dc pairs separated by ch spaces, 5-dc fans into chain spaces.
  3. Row B (mesh row): ch-arches and sc anchor.
  4. Repeat Rows A + B until panel height reached.
  5. To hang: fold top edge to create a pocket for a rod (fold over ~4–6 cm and sew), or leave top and add tabs/shells for rings.

Edge

  • Work a blocking-friendly scallop round: sc round, shell round (5 dc shells), pin and block.

7) Table Runner or Runner (motifs or strip)

Two ways: motif runner (join squares) or continuous strip with Repeat B.

Motif runner (decorative)

  • Make square motifs by working a small center with fans and add a square-squaring round (group fans into 4 sides) — that’s Repeat B’s motif version.
  • Join-as-you-go for neat seams.
  • Finish with scalloped border.

Strip runner (continuous)

  • Chain to runner width and work fan + mesh repeat (Rows A+B) until desired length. Add scallop ends.

Sample table runner — multiple 8 + 1: chain 49 (8×6 +1) for a narrow runner, repeat pattern to desired length, block heavily.

Stitch-by-stitch sample for Blouse (size M) — copy-paste ready

This is an explicit short script using Repeat A.

Materials: DK + 3.5 mm hook.

  1. Chain ch 57 (6×9=54 +3).
  2. Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across. Turn.
  3. Row 2 (repeat row R): ch 3, dc in next dc, *ch 3, skip next dc, (dc, ch1, dc) into previous ch-1 space, ch 3, dc in next 2 dc* — repeat to row end, end with dc in top of turning chain. Turn.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until panel measures 55 cm (or your desired half-length). Make second panel the same. Block both.
  5. Sew shoulders: overlap 3 cm each side (or leave central neck gap 20 cm). Sew sides from hem up 18 cm and finish armhole with 2 rounds of sc. Add neck sc round.

That’s it — one memorized row builds the whole blouse.

Finishing & blocking (general)

  • Lightly block each piece to even the lace. Cotton benefits from wet-blocking; synthetic fibers from steam blocking.
  • Weave ends inside seams.
  • For garments, always try on before final seaming to adjust neck/armhole width.

Quick Troubleshooting

  • Uneven edges → add a sc round before shell border.
  • Too open → use a smaller hook or substitute hdc for dc in base row.
  • Puffy or stiff → use yarn with more drape (bamboo, viscose blends) and slightly larger hook.
  • Motifs off-size → block every motif; adjust final rounds to even size.

Short Project Planner (what to do first)

  1. Pick model (blouse, tunic, dress, etc.).
  2. Choose repeat (A = airy blouse/pareo; B = decorative runner/curtain).
  3. Make a 10×10 cm swatch using hook & yarn; measure stitches/rows per cm.
  4. Calculate chain length using stitch count and multiple constraints in patterns.
  5. Crochet panels/motifs, block, assemble, add edging.
